We photographed NPR’s Code Switch team in Washington, D.C., creating a set of professional headshots that reflect both individual personality and shared purpose. Known for their fearless cultural commentary and deeply thoughtful storytelling, the team brought an inspiring sense of authenticity and warmth to each portrait. The session focused on clean lighting, natural expressions, and relaxed yet confident poses, resulting in images that feel honest, human, and intentional. For this session, we wanted the lighting to echo the boldness and vibrancy of Code Switch’s narrative voice. Gels allowed us to introduce subtle color cues that added dimension and mood—enhancing skin tones while giving each portrait a distinct energy. Instead of leaning into uniformity, we used gel accents to celebrate individuality while maintaining cohesion across the series. The goal was to create imagery that feels editorial yet personal, with light that speaks just as loudly as expression.
